My inspiration for this series, William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896) was a revolutionary force in Victorian Britain: his work as an artist, designer, craftsman, writer, and socialist dramatically changed the fashions and ideologies of the era.
As an artist I've been inspired by his work since I was a child. We can see his influences in my bold and intricate artistic sense. This series is of Raven
"Raven Steals the Light" (sometimes known as "Raven Brings the Light"):
Long ago, in the ancient times of the Coast Salish people, the world was engulfed in darkness. A greedy and powerful chief kept the precious light, which belonged to everyone, locked away in a cedar box in his grand longhouse. The people and animals lived in darkness, unable to see, and life was difficult and gloomy.
Amidst this darkness, Raven, known for its intelligence and wit, hatched a plan to bring light back to the world. Raven decided to take on a great mission – to steal the light from the chief's longhouse and share it with all.
Raven transformed itself into a feathered arrow and craftily attached to the chief's daughter's headdress, concealed from view. Patiently, Raven waited for the perfect moment to strike.
One day, as the chief's daughter danced and twirled in the longhouse, the hidden Raven seized its chance. With a swift movement, it transformed back to its original form and snatched the cedar box containing the light. The startled daughter looked around, but Raven had vanished into the dark sky.
With the light now in its possession, Raven flew high above the land, careful to protect the precious gift from those who might try to take it back. As it soared, Raven opened the cedar box, allowing the brilliant light to escape and fill the world.
Sunlight spilled over the mountains, forests, and waters, bringing warmth and life to everything it touched. The people and animals rejoiced, grateful for the return of light. Raven had accomplished its mission, and the world was forever changed.
From that day forward, light became an essential part of the world. And Raven, in its wisdom, shared the light with all living beings, reminding them that the light was not to be hoarded but to be cherished and shared among all.
